A Kettle of Hawks

This spread is negative-painted.  That means I loaded it up with a riot of color and painted everything that was not a hawk or tree white, using masks.

A group of migrating hawks is called a kettle because it resembles a huge cauldron being stirred.  There are hundreds of them up there.  The only hawk that migrates like this are Broadwing Hawks.  I have had the privilege of seeing such a phenomenon right above our village center.  Stunningly breath-taking.  At least my breath, because I knew what I was seeing.  Every night they come down, en masse, and roost in trees.  They did just that one year at Heller Woods, a nature preserve near me.
